Whether it is a faulty battery, connection issues with the controller, or a camera that will not shoot steadily, these are all causes for concern that you’ll need to stay ahead of. 

If you’ve ever used a DJI Mavic drone, chances are you might have noticed such error codes getting displayed. Luckily, there are several tips and tricks you can employ to restore the integrity of your drone’s flight. In this post, we look at the most common error codes in the Mavic series drones and how you can fix them.

Remote Controller Connection Error

Sometimes, the controller might get disconnected when the drone is in the air, robbing you of the ability to guide the drone even when you can see it. If your Mavic drone has flown to a good distance, you may be able to restore the connection using the following tips:

If you can see or know the direction your quadcopter has flown to, move towards the Mavic to see if it will reconnect. If not, check around to see if there is a running motor, a generator, or power lines and move away from them. These might weaken the signal to your controller, leading to the disconnection. 

Another thing to do is to check the RC antennae and ensure that they are facing in the right direction. If your drone is too high in the air, change the angle of the controller so that the antennae are pointing directly towards the drone.

Finally, you can try switching off the remote controller and switching it back on to check whether the connection will be restored. This will only take a few seconds. 

WiFi Connection Error

If you are flying the Mavic drone by connecting your smartphone to the DJI Go 4 app via a WiFi signal, the app might disconnect and prevent you from managing the drone. By default, the drone will invoke the failsafe Return Home function after 20 seconds.

However, you can try to reconnect to the drone while it’s in the RTH mode by moving closer in the direction of the drone. If this doesn’t work, stop and start the WiFi on your phone; make sure that no other applications are running.

Another thing you can do is to connect RC USB to your mobile device then power the drone on. Proceed to power on the RC and see if it solves the issue. If you’re not successful, follow the mobile-specific steps in troubleshooting. If you’re using an IOS device:

Log out of the DJI Go 4 app then go back in. Check to ensure that there are no warnings and that you can take a photo. Close the DJI Go 4 app, unplug the USB cable, and reconnect via USB. Finally, select DroneDeploy from the popup!

Video Error: Unstable Video while Recording

Unstable video footage may result from various things. Firstly, it could be that the camera panning is too fast. Remember that when you perform a DJI Mavic series comparison, you’ll realize that the camera of the drone has limitations such as frame rates and video definition. As such you can try recording in cinematic mode, which will slow down the drone movements and camera panning for better video resolution. 

Alternatively, it could be the result of the gimbal assembly touching the Mavic’s body. In this case, you want to turn the drone upside-down and assess the gimbal. Make sure that the gimbal tabs are below the retaining tabs to eliminate contact between the camera and the drone’s body. Push the loose tabs in and follow the calibration instructions.

Finally, the solution to this could lie in calibrating the camera and the gimbal. To do this, unfold the Mavic drone and turn it on with the DJI Go 4 app open on your smartphone. Look for the three dots in the top right corner of the app and tap them to enter General Settings then press the camera icon and proceed to “Auto Calibrate Gimbal”.

Drone Flight Error: The Drone will not Fly Properly

When you notice your drone flying unusually, the issue could be stemming from possible signal interference. Note that there are many signals that the Mavic drone is receiving and outputting, so any obstacles like waterfalls, powerlines, buildings, and anything metallic can interrupt the signals. Try to move to a clearer location with minimal interference. 

If this is not the problem, perhaps the drone compass and controller stick are affecting the way your drone is flying. The compass and stick are parts that require calibration every once in a while, to ensure that the drone performs efficiently. To do this, access the DJI Go 4 app on your smartphone and choose “aircraft status bar”, select “compass” then “calibrate”.

From here, follow the appropriate instructions on the app. When it comes to calibrating the controller stick, go to the app and select “general settings” then choose the icon resembling a controller. Select “remote controller calibration” and the app will guide you through the rest!

Another possibility is that the flight controller is broken. Remember that the controller helps in the orientation of the drone by manipulating its motors. If the motors are not showing any signs of physical damage but are still underperforming, this could point to a damaged flight controller. If you’re still experiencing an unstable drone flight after attempting all the above solutions, try replacing your flight controller. 

GPS Connection Error

If you keep on losing connection to GPS, the firmware you’re using may be out of date. Try updating the Mavic firmware to fix any GPS connection problems. The other solution is to calibrate your Mavic drone appropriately. If the drone’s Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is not calibrated, you might experience a faulty GPS signal. Also, watch out for possible physical signal interference. If you’re flying close to obstacles like buildings, waterfalls, powerlines, etc, this could hamper the connection to your drone and result in loss of GPS signal. Try relocating to an open area with fewer obstacles to prevent signal interference. 

Finally, if you’re flying your Mavic drone using a smart device like a phone or tablet, stick to an area with a strong WiFi signal. If your tablet or phone cannot maintain an internet connection, your GPS signal will automatically be lost. 

Power-On Error: The Device won’t Turn On

Sometimes, you might try switching on your drone but nothing happens! In this case, the drone’s battery could be faulty. Remember that the battery pack should have four green LED lights when you turn it on and on a full charge. Try charging the drone for at least one hour to restore the battery capacity.

SD Card Error

To fix an SD card error, check to confirm that there’s enough storage space left on the SD card. Try formatting the card before you update it and be sure to create a backup file. Proceed to download the corresponding firmware and once you’ve extracted the file, export the BIN file to your SD card. Remember not to change the filename of the BIN file.
